Word Description
Bushing This is the part of a swing hanger that provides relatively friction-free movement required for safe and fun swinging. Bushings are most commonly made of a tough nylon for residential-grade hangers and bronze for commercial-grade hangers. Note that bronze bushings are more durable, but also more squeaky than their somewhat less durable nylon cousins.
CoPoly An abbreviation for "Copolymer," this type of semi-flexible plastic is often used in the manufacture of both residential and commercial-grade swing seats. It is a very durable material that is typically available in bright primary colors – Red, Blue, Green, Yellow – and sometimes in Black and Tan with a non-toxic chemical treatment that reduces color fading due to ultraviolet light exposure.
Galvanization Iron and steel rust. Galvanization provides a coating of zinc to the iron or steel that prevents rust by insulating it from contact with air and water. There are multiple types of galvanization. The two most commonly employed on metal hardware and chain associated with swing set components are hot-dipped galvanization and electro-galvanization. The former produces a smooth dull gray colored coating, while the latter creates a slick shiny silver colored surface.
Plastisol Plastisol is a semi-soft plastic coating used especially to reduce the between link pinch problem of swing chains. It is also used as a coating on metal trapeze bars and rings, providing a better grip.
Polyethylene Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer consisting of long chains of the monomer ethylene. It is a hard and durable plastic used in many playground equipment components and accessory items including slides, trapeze rings, grab handles, steering wheels, and more.
Polymer Due to the extraordinary range of properties accessible in polymeric materials, they have come to play an essential and ubiquitous role in everyday life - especially in plastics and elastomers. A simple example is polyethylene, whose repeating unit is based on ethylene monomer.
Roto-Molding Using low density polyethylene plastic resin, roto-molding is used to produce high quality residential and commercial-grade playground slides and other plastic events and components. When compared to blow-molding and the use of polyethylene structural foam (especially for playground slides), the process produces a thicker more durable plastic that is less susceptible to cracking.
Slide Slipping and sliding are a favorite activity of kids. In modern playstructures, the slide serves an important function. In imaginative play it can become a quick escape route from the "castle", or part of the prescribed route in a game of "follow the leader". Whether a basic wave slide or a dizzying spiral, however it is integrated into the structure, one or more slides is generally considered an essential component for any backyard residential or commercial playstructure.
Stand-Alone Event Providing an opportunity for individual play and/or follow-the-leader play, stand-alone events are often incorporated into large playgrounds with a large central play-structure, and/or used in areas with limited space. Examples of such events are Slides, Climbers, Spring Riders, Balance Events, Fitness Events, Merry-Go-Rounds, See Saws, and Sand & Water Play Events.
Swing Any playground event where the main kinetic action is back-and-forth, or in the case of tire swings, around-and-around. The motion of swinging brings joy to kids of all ages. Modern swings offer a wide variety of swinging options: Beginning Swings for the Infant & Toddler, Belt Swings, Flat Swings, Disc Swings, Tire Swings, Standing Swings, and more.
Swing Connectors This category of items includes the venerable S-Hook, Clevis (sometimes called Shackle), Spring Clip, and Quick Link. Any of these can be used to connect a Swing to Chain and Chain to Swing Hanger. The S-hook is a permanent connection, the other three can be removed. Note that the Spring Clip and Quick Link should only be used in a residential setting. The Clevis requires a special tool (called a hex tool or clevis tool) to operate it.
Swing Hanger A specialty hardware item that provides relatively friction-free back-and-forth motion through the use of a bushing, usually made of nylon or bronze.
